Just 40 km south-west of Munich city centre lies the lovely Kloster Andechs, comprising a Benedictine monastery, a church and a fantastic beer garden with restaurant. Overlooking the beautiful Lake Ammer (Ammersee), the 1,000-year-old monastery is famous for brewing its own beer, considered one of Germany’s finest and the monks are delighted to serve it in Andechs’ own enormous beer garden - all 3,500 seats are usually packed out with happy hikers waiting to sample the beer.

The lovely village and monastery are the oldest place of pilgrimage in Bavaria; since 1455 Benedictine monks have welcomed pilgrims to their beautiful church and monastery. The monks brew at least 7 varieties of beer, some dark, some light in colour, ale as well as wheat-based brews.

Lake Ammer is part of the 5 lakes country, which begins at Starnberg, just a short drive south-west of Munich’s city centre. Lake Ammer is located between the towns of Herrsching and Dießen am Ammersee. Visitors can take a historic paddle steamer to cross the lake in style.
