Apart from Munich’s own tourist attractions, Bavaria has a plethora of spectacular sights to offer. Perhaps as famous as the Oktoberfest, the world’s largest beer festival, is Neuschwanstein Castle, the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s castle at California’s Disneyland. Perched on a rocky hill that overlooks the village of Hohenschwangau close to the town of Füssen, Neuschwanstein Castle was the brainchild of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, a close personal friend of composer Richard Wagner.

The reclusive king wanted to have his own hide-away, where nobody could pester him with affairs of state – or perhaps a place where his creditors could not reach him, since he paid for the construction of the castle out of his own pocket. The 19th century castle is surrounded by the most beautiful countryside, ideal for hiking and mountain-biking. Some 60 million people have already visited the castle and it remains one of Germany’s most visited tourist attractions, not least of all because the views over the two lakes and the valley below is simply breath-taking.

From Munich motorists should take the motorway A96, then exit onto the A7, heading for Füssen. From there motorists should follow the B17 to Schwangau, then follow the sign-posting for the village of Hohenschwangau.
